Marquee Novelty tables evolved after J. Brunswick merged with Cincinnati competitor Julius Balke & Company in 1873, there after called the J. Brunswick & Balke Co. Most of the tables produced by Brunswick to that point were designed with vertical frames resembling the English tables. In 1874, Brunswick introduced the Star of the West model that had a unique frame with slanted sides. Called the bevel frame, it was the prototype of table design for the next forty years. It was the Victorian period and this period produced some of the most remarkable furniture and architectural designs. Stylistically, the use of fancy ornamentation such as carving, marquetry, incised spoon carving, brass filigree, embolization and gilding, defined this idiom of design. Brunswick was producing over 700 tables a year with about 60 employees. The Marquee tables were mostly custom made for interior decorators and architects. They were aimed at the very high-end customers that wanted something very special. This Marquee Novelty table, serial number 15864, is a standard regulation 4-1/2 x 9-foot size. It has the original Vermont, one-inch thick slate bed. The woods are Burl Ash, Ebony, Walnut and Rosewood.
